How to talk to your teens about smart risks

Did you know that teenagers rank their parents as the main influence over which risky behaviours they choose to engage in — even more important than their peers? Research shows that parents have more control than they might think over whether their teens practise safer behaviours and feel comfortable talking with them about the risky decisions they face each day.
Given the growing amount of research pointing to parents’ influence in keeping their teens injury-free, Parachute has developed educational resources for parents through a mix of workshops, resources and presentations. We have conducted a nationwide survey of parents and their children to help us understand how teens feel their parents influence their risk behaviours and how we can best address safety concerns of teens and their parents.
Parachute has developed a parent presentation, No Regrets Live for Parents, aimed at educating parents on how to talk with their teens about risk. Through video vignettes and a live parent speaker, this hour-long presentation shares information designed to help parents find the most effective ways to reach their teens with smart risk messages. The speaker who hosts the show is a parent whose child has been seriously hurt or killed by a preventable injury. The video vignettes feature monologues of teens describing their frustrations communicating with their parents about issues related to risk taking and injury, including distracted driving, partying and sport.
